Through palette knives and tactile layers, I map the journey of a life lived across four continents. My art is where the heat of Africa, the grace of Italy, and the light of the North collide—unbound, vibrant, and deeply layered.
The Art of Illumination
Arlia-Hamda Elmi is a Helsinki-based abstract expressionist artist and a true citizen of the world, whose work exists as an intensely layered convergence of place, memory, and light. Born in Somalia, raised partially amidst the golden rolling hills of Tuscany, and established in Finland since the age of 16, Elmi’s canvases serve as a profound cartography of human migration. Rooted in a rich, nomadic family heritage and connected to the unseen rhythms of a spirit world, her art is celebrated for its vibrant color palettes, dynamic structural textures, and a palpable energy drawn directly from a deeply personal, global history.
She acts as a true cartographer of light, tracing the sun’s indelible lines across the shifting landscapes of her soul. From the incandescent, blazing embrace of her African childhood savanna to the serene, ethereal luminosity of her Nordic home, light has remained her ultimate muse. It serves as a fluid mirror to the dance of life, echoing the distant shores that have held her gaze across multiple continents.
Upon arriving in the North, Elmi's nomadic heart encountered a completely new realm of existence—a landscape of profound stillness, vast forests, and quiet waters. Her creative process became a form of emotional archaeology. Through a masterfully layered application of acrylics, tempera, watercolors, pastels, and heavy mixed media textures, she translates the chromatic echoes of these contrasting worlds. Her canvases become complex palimpsests of lived experience, where the ancestral raw energy of an African dawn informs the meditative quietude of a Finnish twilight, and the warm pull of the southern sea bridges the silence of a Scandinavian coast.
Elmi’s dedication to her craft has been shaped by years of professional training, including close mentorship with renowned masters such as Giancarlo Caneva and participation in prestigious annual art residencies. Her works have been widely published in respected catalogs, including those by Editoriale Giorgio Mondadori and Catalogo Dell’Arte Moderna. Furthermore, she has participated in internationally significant events, including the Venetian Biennale 2023 and The Route of Leonardo Da Vinci.
She seeks not to replicate a physical landscape, but to evoke its collective memory. Her paintings stand as an intimate invitation to feel these deep resonances. They are a timeless testament to the enduring power of memory, the beauty of cultural interconnectedness, and the majestic journey of a soul traveling across diverse lands, waters, and realms.

The Alchemy of Technique and Spirit
For me, painting is more than an act of creation; it is a profound communion with the spirit world, an essential bridge to an alternative realm rooted in beauty, peace, and breathtaking color. My technique evolves beyond traditional application; it is a meticulous, almost alchemical process where I build canvases in three dimensions.
Using acrylics, tempera, watercolors, pastels, and heavy mixed media and sometimes oil, I apply multiple thick layers, utilizing various tools and my own fingers to literally sculpt the surface. In this dance between the physical and the metaphysical, sections of the canvas become "light receptors"—dense, palpable textures specifically designed to capture and redirect energy. Through this process, each painting is transformed into a living, vibrant entity that resonates with the rhythms of my nomadic heritage and the whispers of the spirit world.
The Genesis of Crimson Dreams
They call it a studio session, but for me, it’s a symphony of orchestrated chaos. Between the hum of the cameras, the scent of raw oils, and the precise adjustment of lights, it can feel like a production. But the second I pick up my palette knife and lay down that first stroke of deep red and burnt ochre? The room completely vanishes.
Crimson Dreams isn't just paint on canvas—it’s a direct channel to my primal memories of running wild across the African Savanna. As a child of a nomadic family, I’ve learned that 'home' isn't a fixed coordinate; it’s the energies and ancestral spirits we carry with us. Here, I’m translating that nomadic fire into something tangible. It’s vulnerable, it’s chaotic, and it’s the most beautiful way I know to breathe a memory into existence for the world to share.

"From the first golden light of youth, I painted earth, I painted truth. A nomadic pulse, a fiery deep, Between the waking and the sleep.
Layers of fire, of heart, of soul, Where subconscious currents make me whole".

An immersive exploration of the interplay between the ethereal and the deep, Lights and Shadows in the Heart of the Seacaptures the elusive threshold where the physical world dissolves into memory. Through deep, layered blues and sudden, vibrant bursts of light, the work evokes the feeling of a nomadic spirit navigating the vast, mysterious currents of the ocean—a silent conversation between the hidden depths and the surface light that defines our existence.
